Tips for writing a historical book.

I am writing a book about the history of screws and screwdrivers. I had never written anything before and I really only started writing this to pass the time and because I was researching something because I am a carpenter and this interests me. Does anyone have any advice for writing this type of book or writing in general? I am out of my league here, so any advice would be appreciated.
