How do you write a character that travels a distance?

The title says it all. How do you write a character who travels from point a to point b in a part that isn’t very important to the main story? Whether it’s 10 miles or 100 miles. Are short chapters a bad thing?

Hi everyone.

I am in the process of writing my first novel, and I realize that my chapters are quite short compared to the norm, at least from what I read. By context, I am writing an adult fantasy novel. I * would * be asking the r / fantasywriters subreddit, but they have pretty strict rules, and this question doesn’t present any ‘fantasy content’ according to its definition, so I’m asking here.

Right now, I’m averaging around 2k words per chapter, which is roughly 5 pages or so. Note that I’m still in Chapter 6, very early. However, I wonder if I should make an effort to add more details with descriptions etc. I am not planning to make it a short book in any way. Right now, I’m assuming you’ll have around 200,000 words when I’m done, but with many small chapters instead of fewer long chapters. These chapters are not exactly sequential either, as they change the perspective and subplot, so combining them will not be very easy nor will it make sense.

So to summarize, my question is:

Should I be concerned that my chapters are short?
