Cheers for Peers: Show Gratitude in the Workplace

Every person who reads this article has a coworker (or two, or three, or four) who does their job in such a way that you can do YOUR job more effectively. You know who I’m talking about: the people who always meet the deadline, have the answers, are there for you when you need them.

Why not take a moment or two today to think about those people and say thank you? Sure, they know how you feel, but there’s nothing like hearing it out loud.

Better yet, try some of these creative ways to cheer on your peers:

Random Acts of Kindness: Be sure NOT to leave on Friday afternoon until you have performed an act of kindness for a co-worker. Help her with a project, bring her a cup of coffee and buy her lunch.

Write a Thank You Letter: Write a thank you letter to your co-worker specifically describing what he does to deserve your praise.

Celebrate successes: When one of your coworkers reaches a goal or milestone, do what you can to help celebrate! Bake a cake, decorate your workspace, and sing a celebratory song.

Having lunch with someone new – Do you always have lunch with the same people? Once a week or once a month, try eating with someone else. Get to know all of your coworkers. You may find that you develop an amazing friendship or two.

Write them down: Let’s start writing people for the good stuff! If a co-worker has gone above and beyond, write it down and congratulate him on his boss!

Supporting them when they are down: We all have challenges that we must face, and a solid system of support at work can help us face them more effectively. Do you consider how you can support your coworkers under stress? A group of coworkers wanted to support a woman who had a nose job and had to come to work with a cotton ball sewn into her nose.

Knowing that she had a great sense of humor, everyone greeted her with cotton balls taped to their noses in support. The ice broke, they laughed together and the co-worker was able to do her job without shame.

Start a peer-to-peer recognition team: If your workplace doesn’t already have one, why don’t you approach your boss with this idea? Build a team whose sole purpose is to recognize your coworkers. It rotates members annually so that everyone has an opportunity to serve.

Use your creativity and you will find countless ways to say “I couldn’t do it without you!”
