Overwhelmed by the editing process. Where to start
Last week I finished my first draft (hooray!) But this week I’ve made very little progress editing it.
I am writing a Hobbit-esque adventure that follows a small number of central characters who travel through a new world and encounter a large number of minor characters along the way. There are several subplots in progress, so all the paths of the characters are intertwined.
I need to ensure that various stories make sense (time, reasoning, etc.), character arcs are developed, underlying themes are present, the rhythm stays at the reader’s pace, the world feels real, the chapters and scenes are balanced. , the culture of each character is evident … I have a longer list of articles to deal with.
I have tried to put together an action plan, but I end up creating something too complex that overwhelms me.
There must be a standardized way to get this. What am I missing? : /
Edit: I think visualizing all of this is the problem. I have too many spreadsheets and documents that look at history in too many ways. I’m having trouble seeing the story * clearly *.
