Korean TV dramas and all the Korean stuff invading the Philippines
It had to happen. The increasing popularity of Korean television dramas in the Philippines, coupled with the massive migration of Koreans to the country, would surely affect the entertainment industry in more ways than one. Recently, local airwaves have been dominated by Korean pop music (Kpop), especially the Wonder Girls and 2NE1.
And part of the Kpop 2NE1 group is Sandara Park, who used to be one of the most famous celebrities in the Philippines. Boys Over Flowers is currently possibly the Filipinos’ favorite television show right now. The ladies have fallen in love with the members of the Korean F4, especially Lee Min-ho and Kim Bum.
Therefore, it was inevitable that there would be some links between Korean actors and Philippine actresses. A commercial starring Lee Min-ho and Sandara Park was released in Korea almost a month ago. OB’s Cass Beer ad featured a kiss scene between the two celebrities that made thousands of Filipinos green with envy.
And just a few weeks ago, Kim Bum arrived in the Philippines to film a series of RC Cola commercials with local celebrity Maja Salvador. The commercial set that is slated to launch will soon have a romantic theme. It seems this is just the beginning of the ties between the two countries, at least in the entertainment industry.
Some even say that a Korean invasion is currently taking place in the country. More and more Koreans are studying in Philippine schools and universities. Korean magazines are now available at local bookstores and their music is now sold in record stores. Koreans have also opened numerous grocery stores and restaurants.
Maybe it’s just a matter of time before they start to become heads of local companies and the like, maybe they even surpass the success of the Chinese in the country. Only time will tell. But for now we should enjoy all the Korean TV dramas and music that our hearts desire.
