How do you create connections with a character?

I am currently writing a story and I plan to turn it into a light novel / officially published novel in the future, and a problem occurs to me.

How can I make readers “love” or connect with the protagonists and deuteragonists? Through personality and such? Tales and progress? Like “building a connection to the characters.”

Sounds like a stupid question, but the one I’m really stuck with. I would really appreciate the help. Thank you.
