Now that recent events are forcing me to stay home, I can read more, but I haven’t done much recently, which may be the source of a minor problem I have: creating a mood. I especially see in Neil Gaiman’s short stories that a certain mood is being created, be it a creepy old place, a nostalgic city, a comic scene in a laboratory, Shakespeare in Hamlet (which I have been reading) creates an atmosphere with his first scene at a guard post.
What I wonder is how. I’m writing a novel that takes place mainly in a post-apocalyptic dictatorial city, and I can’t understand the right frame of mind – my vocabulary and prose lead me to an overly unbearable and inscrutable frame of mind or that of a Midwestern town. Is there any other way to express mood?
