How do you write a character that travels a distance?

The title says it all. How do you write a character who travels from point a to point b in a part that isn’t very important to the main story? Whether it’s 10 miles or 100 miles. Did you just do a massive time jump? Or do you fill the short or long trip with important things that happened? The title says it all. What makes a reward feel "earned"?

Something that has been puzzling me lately is when people or critics refer to a plot development as “won” or not. I understand the concept well enough; sometimes the sacrifice of a character, the development of the relationship or anything else does not really feel cathartic, but rather added. What confuses me is that these plot points may have appropriate settings for your payments. The character has been implying that they have fallen in love with xyz for a while, or realized that being a member of a community implies sacrifice for the greater good, etc. However, even with these configurations, these developments still lack the quality that makes them feel satisfactory. In that case, how does a writer go about making a “earned” profit, beyond simply adding a Chekov weapon setup?
