Today, the news is not what it used to be and many of the US newspapers are closing. You can collect any of the newspapers in the country and one third of the content will be exactly the same, since fewer and fewer journalists have jobs, and more information is collected from the PA as filler. It is difficult to say in the future whether there will even be newspapers, many have predicted their disappearance for a long time and, unfortunately, that potential eventuality is increasingly real every day.
If you are concerned about news writing topics, if you think this is a fascinating topic, or if you are a writer or reporter, I would like to recommend a very good book on this subject. The name of the book is;
“Reports and news writing” by the Missouri Group and The School of Journalism; University of Missouri in Columbia, 1988.
In the first part of this book, he talks about philosophy and methods for presenting accurate and fair reports. It also explains the damage that partial reports or reporters who have a hidden agenda can cause. In fact, I was pleased to see this series of chapters in the first part that dealt with ethics in the media, something that I think is missing today, of course, this book was written 20 years ago.
In the second part of this book, they talk about ways to gather information for writing and in the next part they explain the importance of good writing and basic skills. He also talks about sources, protected sources, news search and complex stories. Parts four, five and six of this book are about applying the techniques to create the news.
In part seven there are case studies that are very interesting. An interesting notation was that of 514 local stories, only 11 of them appeared in other newspapers, and one has to wonder why. There are many factors for this, such as the impact on other areas, the proximity, the topicality of other stories that were similar for their communities, the novelty of the story and the amount of human conflicts. He talked a lot about the secondary news cycles, where the stories had a new perspective.
This is a very interesting book to read, and one that I have in my writing library. If you plan to write about current events, current affairs, news or even political events, I recommend that you own this book. In fact, I hope you please consider this.
