How to write a book that is more than a book
Choose a universal theme, any universal theme, and run it. Never stop running.
When trying to decide what makes a topic universal, think this way; Can this make someone, anywhere, feel something? Will this resonate with my readers on a deeper level? Is this a generally related topic?
If you answered yes to all three questions, then you have a universal theme.
Universal themes are, in essence, what will make a book important to people long after they forget who their characters are and what happened to them. Universal themes are what made books like Harry Potter timeless, and classics like Pride and Prejudice, The Scarlet Letter and The Great Gatsby still resonate with us today.
As a writer, it is our job, our call really to try to understand the human experience. We really need to get into the minds of the characters and, in doing so, get them something that everyone can identify with.
What kind of problems are going on that many people have to go through at some time in their lives? What makes this character’s fight seem real and what can be learned from it?
Will the events and the different topics you discussed in this book continue to be important in a hundred years?
Those are the questions you should ask yourself when you try to write a book that is more than a book.
For all those who are still perplexed and have no idea where to start, here are some very good examples of umbrellas:
Love: first love? Love and cry someone who has just died? Dysfunctional love? Obsessive love? Unconditional love? Love conquers all?
Death – Returning from the dead? The inevitability of death? How to deal with the death of a loved one? Death and torture? Survival?
Fear: how do you consume everything? How to be brave despite fear?
Paranoia: how can it ruin your life? In relation to mental health?
Mental health: depression? Multiple personality disorder? Social anxiety? Narcissistic personality disorder? Suicide?
Universal themes give books a kind of transcendence that makes them more than just books. They teach us about life, what it means to grow and fall in love, and make us learn about the world around us all the time while making us learn about ourselves.
Start writing about what you love and what matters to you today. Trust me, someone will definitely care too.
