Thoughts on a perfect memory for a character.
One of the characters in my story has what I call a "perfect memory." Not that I have explicitly said it but it's implied because they remember everything.
I've heard a lot of people angrily critique it saying that a perfect memory is not a thing. Which I can understand. Whether it is just really good, or perfect can be up to interpretation and debate.
A perfect memory is undoubtedly a strength in most characters. Most characters. I've chosen to make this incredible ability a disadvantage to my main character. It's undoubtedly helpful in attaining their goals but the main plot and character development behind the idea is that whenever my main character goes to sleep they remember horrible memory's in perfect detail.
The isolationist part of my main character doesn't share their past with the rest of the characters. Which adds tension to many scenes and layers to all the characters. Including heated debates, fighting among friends, and painful conversations.
The whole idea of a perfect memory was a reason I used to explain an important plot development in my head. Now the question, do you think the idea of having a perfect memory adds to the story, or can the character just have a good memory and would the story be just as good?
