How do you write a character that travels a distance?

The title says it all. How do you write a character who travels from point a to point b in a part that isn’t very important to the main story? Whether it’s 10 miles or 100 miles. Did you just do a massive time jump? Or do you fill the short or long trip with important things that happened? The title says it all. Any advice on how to write really hateful characters?

I have had this problem twice when I have a character that is supposed to really get on the nerves of the readers, but instead becomes sympathetic or evil. More often the latter. Any advice?

Edit: I’m not just talking villains. Actually none of the characters I mentioned ARE. But any advice is still highly appreciated 🙂
