How do you write a character that travels a distance?

The title says it all. How do you write a character who travels from point a to point b in a part that isn’t very important to the main story? Whether it’s 10 miles or 100 miles. Did you just do a massive time jump? Or do you fill the short or long trip with important things that happened? The title says it all. I have created the rules of a complex magic system and I really don't know what to do with it.

I have created a magic system for my book that on the surface looks like another harsh magic system, but in depth it is really complex (also each magic school uses a different set of rules).

Now the problem is, I really want to explain it, but it’s not the centerpiece of the story and I don’t want to do a 40-page exposition. Should I just “drop it” and explain a little bit really relevant to my story? What should I do with the rest?

P.S. Sorry for poor England. / s
