How do you write a character that travels a distance?

The title says it all. How do you write a character who travels from point a to point b in a part that isn’t very important to the main story? Whether it’s 10 miles or 100 miles. Did you just do a massive time jump? Or do you fill the short or long trip with important things that happened? The title says it all. Over writing

I could really use some help with improving my writing skills, I have a tendency to overwrite or over explain both in written format and verbally. The reason I do it is because I want to be concise and effective in speech and writing, but I feel like its way overdone. I’ve asked input from my peers and family about this and they say that its true. One in my family says to be careful as it is getting to the extent that it reminds them of the character in the polar express movie that explains everything about the trains. My response was yikes! Not good! (Internally cringing at the thought.) So, I thought I’d ask for advice as to break this down simply because I want it to be effective but not overbearing. Could someone please give some advice on this? Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thank you.
