6 unknown rules for choosing the best resume writing service

So here is the thing:

I’ve seen many times that people have hired a resume writer, only to be left with a Word document with a bunch of cool words and sexy adjectives, but no interviews or offers.

Finding the best resume writing service that will really give you your money’s worth is not as easy as most people think it is.

There are tons of companies and individuals who constantly claim to be “experts” in resume writing.

So the question is:

How do you choose the right service?

Below are the 6 rules to ensure that the person or company you hire writes you the best possible resume.

Rule n. ° 1: they must still be experts who carry out the entire job search process (interview, networking, negotiation, etc.)

Even though you are looking for your resume to be written, it is very important that you find someone who is an expert and has a track record not just in resume writing.

Instead, they must be experts and have a history of landing DEALS.

Why does this matter?

The resume is just a small part and ingredient of what it takes to get good deals.

Most companies like to “productize” their services.

For example, they will offer a resume writing package, an interview preparation package or an essential networking package, etc.

So what ends up happening is that companies and clients start to think of each part of the job search process as separate components, rather than a complete process. But that is very wrong.

The truth is, you CANNOT see the process as separate components due to the fact that each component of the job search process (networking, resume, interview, negotiation, etc.) interacts and depends on each other.

So it’s okay if you want to pay just for the resume, but if the company or person you end up working with doesn’t have the knowledge, experience, or history of running the ENTIRE job search process, then you could have paid a lot of money for some sexy words in a Word document, instead of interviews and offer letters.

Rule # 2: focus on interview conversion rates as your primary goal

Anyone can write something that “sounds good”, and it has a ton of clever words that can only be found in the thesaurus, yet very few people can write resumes that actually turn into interviews.

At the end of the day, when you let go of all the spontaneous and wellness aspects of the process, you can’t get a deal just by having a resume that sounds good.

All that matters with a resume is whether it is helping you get interviews, at the end of the story.

Therefore, you need to make sure that the person or company you work with is hyper-focused on the same goals you have. If you want to have a resume that allows you to get interviews, make sure that the goal of the person or company you’re working with is to write a resume that gets the most interviews.

If you find someone who concentrates more on how amazing it will make you sound, or how you are going to highlight your best attributes, then your goals are not properly aligned.

However, if you have someone who focuses on reverse engineering on how to increase your application-to-interview conversion rate, then it’s someone you probably want to work with.

Rule n. ° 3: they must have a data-oriented and metric-oriented approach to writing resumes

As Harvard Business School lesson 101 says, “You cannot handle what you cannot measure”.

If the company you’re working with doesn’t track your resume data or metrics, then how will they know what controls the application-to-interview conversion rates, let alone improve those rates so you can get the most number of possible interviews?

This rule ties in with rule # 2: If they’re not even tracking the data and don’t have a solid understanding of their analytics and metrics, then there’s no way they can focus on increasing their conversion rates.

This rule is also related to n. # 1: This is why it is important to work with someone who has full service knowledge and experience.

What we have learned after writing hundreds of resumes and getting thousands of high-quality interviews and job openings is that: The resume conversion rate is not based on how elegant someone’s background can make sound or how many numbers, percentages and action verbs you can put on a resume.

No no no.

What we have found in our proven CV conversion rates is that it is based on how well we position the person’s background for the given role …

And it is impossible to position something if we do not deeply understand the role in the first place.

Deep understanding of the role does not mean repeating what is said in a job, anyone can do it. Deep understanding of role means really understanding the true intrinsic need for role and how it fits into the corporate ecosystem.

Rule n. ° 5: they need to deeply understand their background

This is related to Rule # 4: Contrary to popular belief, the most important contribution of a resume writer is not to write about his background, it is positioning your background for the role you want

The job of a resume writer is to deeply understand their backgrounds so they can “find the gold.” Gold is the experiences, responsibilities, and accomplishments you didn’t think twice about and could double or triple the interview-to-interview request conversion rate.

Many resume writers ask you to fill out a quick admission form / questionnaire or to spend 30 minutes with you over the phone.

Now here’s the thing …

I have been writing resumes for a long time and have written resumes with extremely high application-to-interview conversion rates, and through that experience I can assure you that it takes much more than 30 minutes to understand someone’s background.

The second problem is that everyone’s backgrounds and experiences are so diverse that there is no point in having a standard questionnaire because there are so many important follow-up questions to ask yourself to make sure nothing escapes.

Writing a resume with a high conversion rate is a much more strategic activity when done correctly.

Rule n. # 6: you need to make sure a resume writer is the solution to your problem

Even the best resume writing service won’t offer you better deals. End of story.

Why?

Because there are many other components that go into landing a higher salary offer letter, from a better company, for a better role or a more senior degree, especially if you are transitioning from roles / industries.

There is the interview component, the trading component, the networking component, the target market analysis component, the experience / skill design component (just to name a few).

Also, if you want to get really good deals (great pay, great function and in a great company), the competition will be very high and you will have to solve the following problems:

  • How will you beat the candidates who have more experience than you?

  • How will you beat the candidates who have more education and / or pedigree backgrounds than you?

  • How will you negotiate the payment?

  • How will your interview responses separate you from your competitors?

  • Having a solid strategy for all of these questions is critical to winning the best offer cards.

Unfortunately, NONE of these questions are answered or addressed in the resume.

That is why it is unfair to ask someone to just write their resume and expect to win bids for the best companies or get 50% increases, etc.

Having clients who got job offers for 75% more pay than they were doing is feasible, but that definitely did NOT happen because all we did was write the resume.

The fact is this: if you are having trouble getting job offers, or your situation is a bit complicated (industry / role transition, going to a higher position, unemployed, etc.), then you need more than just resuming help .

Most of the time people come to me frustrated, shocked and disappointed that they are not getting offers after hiring a person or company that promised tons of offer letters once they had a new resume.

But they ended up getting what they paid for.

If you hire a plumber to build an entire house, what do you think would happen? Complete failure right?

Why is that? This is because there are many other components involved in building a home, for example: electricity, paint, roof, carpet (and this is just to name a few).

The same applies here.

If you…

  • They are having trouble getting job offers.

  • You want to get better job offers that would be an update of the current job you have

  • They are in a somewhat complicated situation (industry / role transition, going to a larger role, unemployed, etc.)

So you can’t hire a resume writer and expect to receive tons of high-quality job offers.

Just like hiring a plumber to build a whole house is a mess, hiring only a resume writer if you are looking for high quality deals is also a bad idea because you would not have tackled interviews, networks, market analysis yet objective, negotiation, etc.

You should hire someone to work with you through the entire process who is experienced, knowledgeable and has a track record throughout the job search process, not just resume writing.

Secondly, I would also recommend not being cheap who you contract with as well. Be cheap with the soap you use, be cheap with the type of paper plates you buy.

But I promise you that you will regret being cheap and refusing to hire high-quality help to advise you on your career, the financial asset that produces all the money you use to live the rest of your life.
