How much of a red-shirt's screen time should be dedicated to their death?

In order to help build tension and add to my word count, I’m currently adding a red-shirt into the first act. For those of you who don’t know, a red-shirt is a character who’s sole purpose is to die, usually in order to prove what’s at stake. But I’m wondering, even though this character I’m writing exists solely to prove the monster is dangerous early-on, how much time do have to spend building them up before I off them, and once I do off them, how much time should I spend focusing on it?
