How do you write a character that travels a distance?

How not to accidentally romanticize abuse and mental problems. Asking for advice.

I am writing a fantasy and romance novel in which one of the main characters and a protagonist’s love interest had been severely (mentally) abused at home. I read a lot about trauma and some of the symptoms, but I’m afraid I will accidentally do something that would be considered romanticizing this topic, which I am not trying to do. You know, like, “ OMG, I’m going to fix it, ” and things like that, which were overused many years ago. What should i avoid? Are there certain phrases or clichés in bad taste?
(I’m not a native speaker, sorry for the mistakes)
