How do you write a character that travels a distance?

The title says it all. How do you write a character who travels from point a to point b in a part that isn’t very important to the main story? Whether it’s 10 miles or 100 miles. Did you just do a massive time jump? Or do you fill the short or long trip with important things that happened? The title says it all. In what ways can men address female characters who are not calling?

EDIT / TL; DR: Sorry for the title, I can’t edit it now. He intended to find a term for a female character of the same age who was not condescending, perverted, or rude.

I live in a country where English is a second language, but not the primary language used.

I am trying to write a dialogue between a male and female character (of the same age) where they are fighting in their first meeting. The male character is supposed to look suspicious, a little annoyed, but not evil or malicious in intent. The female character is the one who starts the fight, assuming he is one of the bad guys, but he is not.

I was going to make him talk to her without knowing her name, and “sister” was the first thing I thought about. It would be normal in my mother tongue, but I don’t know if this is universal. Maybe it would come off as flamboyant? Wouldn’t there be names at all?
