Curriculum vitae - Functional vs. Chronological - What's the difference?
I have been teaching business writing at the university level for the past 5 years. During that time, I have taught hundreds of students how to write effective resumes. Many of my students are confused about the differences between functional and chronological resumes. Actually, they are even confused about the name, because it really is “reverse chronological”. So, I’ll give you a quick explanation of what each one is.
Chronologically inverse
Can list goal or career summary
Includes a detailed work experience section
List each position you have filled and fully present your duties at each job
Highlights specific accomplishments and responsibilities for each position
Includes an educational section
Includes a brief “skills” section, such as languages and computer skills relevant to the job you are applying for
Functional
It focuses on your skills and experience rather than the specific position you hold or the company works for
List the skills at the top of the resume
You may have a “Sales Skills” section that details all of your sales skills and includes information on each sales job you have held
You can include a section for experience in administration, communications, administration or any other specific skill set you have
Includes a short list of specific jobs and companies at the end of the resume, but does not list the duties on each job
Includes an education section. The location of the section depends on whether it is relevant to the position for which you are applying. The more relevant it is, the higher on the page it should go> br>
You can also highlight your education if it is more relevant to the job than your work experience. It then includes detailed information about the course work that applies to the position for which you are applying.
When should you use functional and when should you use a reverse chronological resume?
If you are looking for a position in the same field in which you are currently working, you should use a reverse chronological resume. This type of resume shows your current work experience. If you want to work in the same field or a similar field, this resume will take you to the door.
If you are changing careers or have changed jobs frequently, a functional resume will work best for you. It allows you to show your skills and minimize your lack of experience in the field. If you are a recent graduate of a specialized program, you can use a functional resume to make your class work stand out
I hope these tips help you write a functional or reverse chronological resume that makes you noticeable. But, if it seems too difficult to write a quality resume, let me WRITE FOR YOU. I will write a cover letter and a resume that will make you stand out from the crowd. My writing service is professional and affordable.
