7 job search tips for recent college graduates
What used to be a job guarantee is no longer the case in today’s competitive labor market. A university degree remains extremely important to ensure a good job. But due to the recession in the economy and the intense competition for jobs, recent university graduates have to learn how to promote themselves effectively.
The biggest challenge facing most university graduates is that there are so many qualified unemployed professionals. What recent college graduates are beginning to learn is how to effectively compete in this difficult labor market. With little or no work experience, you will need to know how to effectively market your qualifications. Due to the large number of graduates in most universities, it is very unlikely that the job placement center will provide you with all the necessary tools to compete successfully in the labor market. You must use the latest job search skills and be able to compete with unemployed workers with more experience. Our 7 job search tips:
1. Use school resources. Most schools have resources (career center) for students and alumni to help you in your search efforts. You will have access to resume writing services and job boards to submit your resumes.
2. Develop a first level curriculum. Your resume is the most important resource in your job search efforts. When developing your resume, be sure to include keywords that allow your resume to be picked up by the employer’s scanning software.
3. Strategic search. It is extremely important that you investigate the jobs you are requesting. This will allow you to direct your resume to this job and assure the potential employer that you are the ideal candidate. If your resume is not oriented to the job offer, it is very unlikely to be reviewed.
4. Attend job fairs and networking events. Networking will be the key to identify the best jobs and learn where the opportunities are. Attend networking events for companies and industries (engineers, sales, IT, etc.).
5. Social networks. Recruiters and human resources professionals routinely use social networks to identify the best talents. Make sure you have a presence in this medium to create visibility for your qualifications. If you have a university social media account, be sure to check if the content is appropriate in case a recruiter or company reviews it.
6. Coaches or career consultants. University graduates are learning what some professionals already know and that is, career consultants and companies can also help you in your job search efforts. These consultants can often help you start your search efforts and can potentially shorten the time you are looking for a job.
7. Interview skills. You will need to refine your interview skills and learn how to effectively prepare for the telephone interview and face-to-face interview. There are skills that you can use that will undoubtedly make a difference in your performance during these sessions. Bad interviewing skills can sabotage a great resume, so make sure you are prepared to be the best.
You should know that an effective job search is a marathon and not a speed race. You must be patient and understand that it can take a little longer than expected to find the job you really want. You must devote many hours to succeed in the job search. Be sure to plan your work and work your plan.
