How do you write a character that travels a distance?

The title says it all. How do you write a character who travels from point a to point b in a part that isn’t very important to the main story? Whether it’s 10 miles or 100 miles. Did you just do a massive time jump? Or do you fill the short or long trip with important things that happened? The title says it all. Is it worth editing when your story stops making sense to you / how to handle the overwhelming?

I am currently in the middle of the eighth chapter. almost with 20K words and feeling very confused.

My characters are not consistent. How they act in a chapter contradicts how they act later, and they are not particularly distinctive. I introduced a pet in the second chapter that I haven't mentioned since then and now I want to change it completely. the tone / narrative does not look anything like the first chapters (it was better). All my sessions seem to have the same structure. I've been wanting to change names.

I often find scenes or emotions or entire conversations that I want to change that would affect the plot and its behavior and relationships, I don't remember when I adequately described an environment because I'm just trying to set aside actions and dialogue, it's a fantasy and I have no idea how magic / god systems work and yet my mind is trying to introduce a completely new one. Then there are infinite writing tips that seem to be things you are supposed to include as you go instead of editing them later.

so yes, I have a lot on my plate mentally. I took a break for a while and it could be just a case of going back to habit, but for now I'm lost.
