How does romantic love show through worldly, seemingly non-romantic / subtle gestures?

One of the scenes in the draft of my story had the protagonist volunteer to cook dinner for her group of friends after they had just escaped an experience / fight near death. One of her classmates follows her into the kitchen even though she says she can do it herself, which is fine, but he takes care of starting to cut the vegetables. In addition, it has broken ribs that are still healing.

She is a little perplexed because he insisted so much, but little does she know that she just wants to spend time with her, and they begin to prepare dinner in silence.
