How do you write a character that travels a distance?

What is a good way to demonstrate what your protagonist is capable of doing from the beginning?

I am currently writing a story about a lifelong traveler, who over the years has acquired some magical abilities and knows how to handle a sword. A fairly standard fantasy rate, but the question I find myself struggling with is this: how can I best demonstrate your battle skill from the beginning before it becomes very relevant to the plot? I feel that if she stops the paralyzed villain because of her specific skill set, it feels like a jerk of an ass if it was not foreshadowed or at least suggested early.

I thought about having her running with some bandits or noisy assistants to the tavern from the beginning, but that at the same time feels as cliché as it can be. On top of that, the first third of the story focuses more on a combination of building threats and worlds, and on their knowledge rather than battle skills. So, I wonder at this point if a random encounter is perhaps the best way.
