How do you write a character that travels a distance?

The title says it all. How do you write a character who travels from point a to point b in a part that isn’t very important to the main story? Whether it’s 10 miles or 100 miles. Did you just do a massive time jump? Or do you fill the short or long trip with important things that happened? The title says it all. How do you delineate / plan your plots?

I'm curious to know how other writers plan their arguments. This is always the hardest part for me, and not having something planned has been a big obstacle for me. The lack of structure always made me lose a lot in writing and has resulted in never really completing a piece much more than a short story. I am in the process of really making a plan so that, for once, I can comfortably write a complete piece without getting stuck at all times.

In a way, I'm asking for advice, but I also want to know how people approach this out of curiosity; It is fascinating that this is always so different from one writer to another.

Do you like to use tables or spreadsheets? Vaguely outlining the story on paper? How do you personally do this kind of thing?
