How do you write a character that travels a distance?

The title says it all. How do you write a character who travels from point a to point b in a part that isn’t very important to the main story? Whether it’s 10 miles or 100 miles. Did you just do a massive time jump? Or do you fill the short or long trip with important things that happened? The title says it all. A question about gay characters

So, something I think about a lot is about homosexual characters in novels and online works. I notice that writers tend to focus on going out and finding themselves, but sometimes I want a story in which the main characters of homosexuality are not the main focus of their character. Like when I read books about heterosexual people, it is not how straight they are and that their righteousness is not something they are struggling with. I want characters that are gay. I am pan / demisexual, but that is not like everything I am.

I guess what I am trying to say / ask is, would you read a story about a gay character but that is not their main focus? At this time, is it better to focus on a more important part of a character's life or the normality of his daily life? I don't know if I'm writing this right, I'm sorry.
