Has anyone tried to publish a book?

I have written a short story. It is actually more like a morbid style of Dr. Seuss, where it is a poem that rhymes. I want to have illustrations on each page as a children's book. I am very artistic and I can draw; However, I can't find illustrations for my life. I think I would be happier with an external perspective. Has anyone sought an illustrator and, if so, where? Also, I know you can make your own book to sell on Amazon, but has anyone really done this successfully? I am very new in this whole marketing issue. I appreciate any advice.
