How do you write a character that travels a distance?

The title says it all. How do you write a character who travels from point a to point b in a part that isn’t very important to the main story? Whether it’s 10 miles or 100 miles. Why do we care so much that certain heroes achieve their goal? But not others?

In Raiders of the Lost Ark we are supporting Indy every step of the way. Cheer up when you succeed or on the edge of our seat when it fails. But why? Surely the Ark is built as a great find for him. And we all know that the Nazis were evil. But somehow, without much more than that, we have enough motivation to take us on this trip with him all the way. And if his ark is that he discovers what is really important (Marion) or discovers a belief and respect for the supernatural, it is not as if they were marked as important needs for him. So why do we care how we do it?

The same with Star Wars. What forces these characters to undertake this search? Luke's adopted parents die, so he leaves and again and again puts his life on this line for this search. Han and the rest too. Why? Why do we think they would stay with this search forever? Why do we support them so strongly? Do we really need so little motivation fuel to take us so far and still stay invested?
