Freelance writing jobs online: 3 ways to avoid fraudulent
The following are three things you can do to avoid online writing scams so you can spend your time investing in legitimate writing opportunities from home.
Never "write for free": One of the most common freelance online writing scams is the "writing sample" scam. The way this works is that a company will ask you to write original content to "judge your writing ability."
Do not fall in the trap. Legitimate companies would never expect you to write for free, or write according to the specifications as it is called in the industry. If you want me to write you an original sample, you expect to pay it.
So, if a company expects free content, even if it is "just a sample to judge its writing ability," say "No, thanks" and continue.
Never pay for job opportunities: Another common scam of freelance writing jobs online is the payment scam for job opportunities. Usually, you are asked to pay the membership or subscription fee to join a site and get job opportunities. This is a red flag, red flag, red flag!
I have been a freelance writer since 1993 and have paid for exactly zero (0) job opportunities: zero. I don't care how good the offer sounds or how low the rate is, don't fall into the trap. Generally, you will be asked to register for a trial period of 3, 5 or 7 days for "only $ 1.95 or $ 2.95".
To your surprise, a week or a month later, your card / checking account is charged for $ 47 or $ 97, the "full membership" rate. And the trick: this will be a monthly recurring rate. And, it may be frankly impossible to get your money back because phone calls and email will go unanswered and / or be recovered.
If this happens to you, the best thing you can do is cancel your account (yes, cancel it) and submit a report to the Attorney General's Office, as well as to the Better Business Bureau.
If you do not cancel your account, you run the risk of charging your card month after month before you can stop it. And, the reason is that, when you register for what you think is the low cost of 3, 5 or 7 days of trial, in the fine print there is a "deceptive" language that gives thieves the right to bill you for recurring way.
Simply, never pay for leads from freelance writing jobs online, ever, and you will avoid this problem altogether.
Do your research: The Internet is your best friend when looking for freelance writing opportunities online. Before investing in any opportunity, free or low cost, do your homework. Freelance writers are known for discovering scams and scammers.
Even a nominal amount of research will reveal freelance writing scams online from real opportunities in freelance writing, if you take the time to search.
