How do you write a character that travels a distance?

The title says it all. How do you write a character who travels from point a to point b in a part that isn’t very important to the main story? Whether it’s 10 miles or 100 miles. Did you just do a massive time jump? Or do you fill the short or long trip with important things that happened? The title says it all. To what extent do I develop a character that I already know will not be relevant in 4 chapters?

I am really quite new to writing: I have many books stranded on page 2, but I am currently writing something and I am dedicated to it.

After a scientist loses his son because of him (driving accident), he takes his dead son to the laboratory where he works and triggers an apocalyptic event. Before this event takes place, she wanders through the jungle with colleagues in her lab trying to find the Cordyceps mushroom. I am struggling with these colleagues with whom you are wandering: I know that they will no longer be relevant about three chapters later, but during the first chapters there will be much dialogue with them. How familiar should the reader do with his personality traits / body characteristics, etc.? I still add and delete information about them.

Another thing that I am considering is to make a complete page dedicated to each character something relevant in which their appearance / story / personality is described, while the descriptions in the story itself are minimal. Has this been done before?
