Why we get so attached to characters.

I read an article somewhere that explained it perfectly. If I can find it again, I’ll make an edit and add the link. But the author talked about how our brains don’t really know the difference between a real life death and a fictional death. Well, we do, but the primal emotional parts of our brains do not. Which is why we can watch a film or read a book and react as if it’s a real person out there – why we still cry whether it’s nonfiction or a film where we know it’s all fake. Because our brains don’t really distinguish between the two.
