What makes a good Protagonist?

Let me know if this has been asked here before. As a newbie, I've been having a tricky time understanding what makes a good protagonist. I'm seeing all this "Make your Antagonists sympathetic" and whatnot. If I make my Antagonist sympathetic, how can I manage to have the audience cheer for the Protagonist, and make them likable?
