Do you need to be vulnerable to be a good writer and write well?
I have been writing since I was 8. I started by writing Harry Potter fan fiction, but my mom told me about copyright when I was 9 and I decided fan fiction was a waste of time (I respect all writing pay no attention to my young self) and decided to write my own stories. But every time I showed it to someone they always thought they knew more than I thought they knew (does that make sense?) because they assumed things about me due to my characters and plot lines. So I began to shy away from writing because it made me feel very vulnerable and exposed.
Fast forward to now, I want to re invest myself in the craft, but I struggle with the same Issues. I have many ideas, some more pragmatic than other more anecdotal ones, but I am working really hard to give away as little of myself as possible. I wonder then, if that detracts from my writing, or my ability to reach people.
So that's where the question comes from. Do you need to be vulnerable to be a good writer and write well?
Should I just shut up and adopt a pen name ? Haha. Thank you if you've read this far, you're a real pal.
