Is there still a market for the horror genre specifically? Or would focusing on a similar subgenre, such as thriller or fantasy, be better for sales and publishing interest?

I love writing horror, but what scares me the most is spending time writing a novel that has little or no audience. Would it be better to write something that could be labeled horror fantasy or supernatural fiction? Or none of that matters and you should write whatever kind of horror you want, as long as you write passionately and from the heart (or something inspiring). I know that if I want to write for myself, I can always self-publish. I’m asking as if I’m sending to an editor. Thanks for any ideas or suggestions!
