Should you use brand names in your fiction?

Hello fellow writers: & # x200B; I am working on getting a manuscript I wrote years ago ready for publication. I noticed that I used a lot of marks in this novel and I am wondering if this is something I should keep or omit. This is my second novel published by the same independent press, and for some reason the first book hardly mentions brand companies, so I don’t know how to handle this. For example, “his father made him get a job at McDonalds because he refused to give him an allowance.” or “She served me a plate of Fruit Loops before I had to take the bus.” Would it be better, both from a literary and legal point of view, to change them to something like “His dad made him get a job at a fast food place …” or “She served me a bowl of fruity cereal earlier? that I had to? take the bus. ” & # x200B; Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
