Technical writing: job interview tips
Technical writing is a field of constantly on-demand employment and service around the world. The number of technical writers is increasing exponentially and there is a lot of competition in the market.
Being a technical writer myself, I know that the interview for a technical writer is different from many other interviews. I’m going to share with you the five most important things that would help you get the job.
1. Prepare a short description of your current job profile / any writing projects.
The first question most interviewers ask is “tell me about your experience / projects and job profile”, you should be prepared to answer this question with confidence. The description should include the following:
-
The types of documents you have worked on, for example. User guides, solution architecture document, troubleshooting guide, etc.
-
Working method, i.e. agile, waterfall, etc.
-
skills and tools used for the job, i.e. Adobe technical suite, Office, XML, DITA, etc.
-
The best thing you like about your job.
2. Prepare for a writing test.
Most companies have a writing test for the selection of technical writers. The following things I must keep in mind for the writing test:
-
Neat and good writing if it is on paper.
-
Please check the grammar and spelling of your documents before submitting if it is an online test.
-
Read passages and paragraphs clearly for writing procedures.
-
Take some grammar tests online before the interview.
3. Know the writing practices that the organization follows.
It is very important that you understand the requirements of the job and present yourself in a way that suits the job. Focus on explaining your skills and how they will be useful in the job you applied for.
4. Read some interesting essays and articles before the interview and talk about them if you get the chance.
It is equally important to be strong in written communication as well as verbal communication in a technical writing job. Improve your verbal skills by reviewing some interesting articles and practice speaking.
Don’t be afraid to share your views on a particular issue if asked, there’s nothing wrong with politely disagreeing, it shows that you can take a stand for yourself.
5. Prepare some questions for the interviewer.
You should analyze the requirements of the position and prepare some questions for the interviewer. It shows that you are interested in the job and want to be part of the organization.
If you master these five points for a technical writing interview, no one will be able to stop you from getting the job. Go ahead and take on the interviews with a smile on your face.
All the best!!
