How do you write a character that travels a distance?

The title says it all. How do you write a character who travels from point a to point b in a part that isn’t very important to the main story? Whether it’s 10 miles or 100 miles. Did you just do a massive time jump? Or do you fill the short or long trip with important things that happened? The title says it all. I just planned the death of my favorite character and it's breaking my heart.

In fact, I am still writing the first draft of the first part of the story, which will be divided into at least two books. I started thinking ahead because I feel super creative today and decided to trace a bit of where I’m taking this character from so it’s easier to write now. I always knew he was going to die, but never knew how, and ended up defining his (incredibly sad) backstory with an outline of the final “perfect” scene and the first draft of the epilogue that takes place a few months later. he dies. Is it strange that he is so upset? I am very proud of everything I accomplished today as I had no idea how to handle his character for quite some time, and now a large part of my story (and of him) makes more sense and I know how it will end. above. I listened to some sad piano music to get me in the mood and cried throughout the sketch and then took a break to take my dog for a walk, and then thought about the epilogue as I walked, and ran home to write. And I cried during that too! Now I’m sitting on my couch whining and still listening to the same music 😭 Somehow this fictional character that only lives in my head and my iPad has managed to touch my heart and I hate myself for killing him. I know I have to, but I’m fighting the temptation to erase everything I just wrote and create a fairytale happy ending for him. He deserves so much better than the life I gave him. Edit: for those wondering, the genre is fantasy. The character in question has been alive for over a thousand years and has finally achieved his ultimate goal and accepted the fact that the love of his life is officially gone. He has people who care and all that, but in the end he has lived so long and he doesn’t have much else to live for. He is badly injured during a battle, so he just lets go. Fortunately, the MC gets to be there in his last minutes and she forgives him for the things he has done. He dies quite happy knowing the role he played in defeating the enemy and knowing that the MC doesn’t actually hate him. I guess it’s bittersweet. And I am also very flattered by those who say they want to read it. I hope to post someday but it will take forever to do it haha 😊 Edit Edit: At someone’s suggestion, I created an alternate ending where he lives and has a happy ending. I wrote it on a break from work. I’ll keep it * just in case * it ends up working better than the original. I still have more than half of my story to write in total. To get that same ending, I’m going to have to sacrifice someone else and I have an idea who it will be and it won’t be fun either. Can anyone remind me why I decided to start writing again?
