Opinions on the whole "write what you know" argument?
I recently had an idea for a novel set in the Middle East in 800 AD with my Muslim protagonist living in a fictional kingdom during that time, but I have a fear that he may face a backlash because the whole plot “write what you know , “so I wanted to hear your thoughts on the subject in general. Do you think that writers should stick to what they know, or do you think that writers, if they do the proper research, should feel free to write outside of their own experiences? For context, I am Muslim but not from the Middle East (represents South Asia)
