How do you write a character that travels a distance?

Struggling with which person to write to.

So I finally embarked on my mission to start writing, yet I am struggling to stick with the person to write for. I found that with particular scenes I can write better in the third person, while in others I am better in the first person. Has anyone had this difficulty before? I have written my first two chapters in first and third person to see how it reads and there are clear areas missing from each version. In the third I lack dialogue and emotion, while in the first I lack description. Any help is greatly appreciated and I am sorry if this is not the right place to post.
