My partner is a talented illustrator and we are both writers: we have been writing a children’s book together inspired by the fact that I am always shedding my hair everywhere. The working title is “Mama’s Hair” or “Mama’s Hair is Everywhere”. As we drafted our ideas on how we’ll illustrate this in a loving and charming way towards “Mama” (not in a whiny way, but rather in a silly way to show how normal it is for “Mama’s Hair” to fall out), I got to thinking that when we think about what the illustration would look like, we’re only thinking about my hair, which is very long, mostly straight, and sits on a white woman’s head. So now I’m thinking how could we make this more inclusive and at the same time cohesive (we were originally stuck on an illustrative idea where the hair is just one long continuous strand from page to page) I started looking around kind of pictures of women of different racial backgrounds than me, so we can brainstorm, but I thought I’d reach out to see if anyone had any ideas! If there’s a better sub to chat about book illustrations, please let me know! Editing to add: It’s a book for young children! I’m thinking 0-3 years?
