Messages and morals

Every day in literature class, they would make us read and try to extract some meaning from old writing assignments, even stupid and nonsensical stories, but every time I write now, I’m not really looking for great meaning, and I’m stuck wondering if that’s something I should be doing. Does every writer have a moral in mind when writing or are literature teachers exaggerating? I know you can write nonsense stories, but does that make it a bad story? How do I find that greater meaning in a job that is halfway there?
