How do you write a character that travels a distance?

The title says it all. How do you write a character who travels from point a to point b in a part that isn’t very important to the main story? Whether it’s 10 miles or 100 miles. Did you just do a massive time jump? Or do you fill the short or long trip with important things that happened? The title says it all. Start over or continue?

I recently finished my first book. (The first of what could become a trilogy) Now. I have its sequel fully planned. But … I was at work today and I had an amazing idea for a story. Which will probably be a separate book. I don’t know if there is a right or wrong path here. But should I write the second book in my series that I have already drawn up? Or leave that to rest and write the new idea? (which is also mentally decent from start to finish)
