My work was called derivative, can I consider it a compliment?

I recently finished a 1950s crime drama in the style of New York. After sending it to a friend who is a writer for the BBC, he called it “Derived.” This was supposed to be a harsh comment, but considering I wanted him to remember that time, I think the comment was welcome. The script is not a cliché or a parody, and the same commentator also called it “pastiche.” How would you interpret these comments?
