How do you effectively combine having a day job and being a published author?

As a writer, you will also need to have an ordinary job if you are not very successful. Now I’m not talking about the writing process, as you can obviously write in your spare time. However, as far as I understand it, being a published author is more than just writing books. Are you not expected to go to places (eg conventions, fairs …) to convince people to actually buy your books? How do you manage to do this on a more regular basis if you have another full-time job? (I have never attended an event like this, so maybe there is something I don’t understand here)
