Tips for writing a gay character

Hey everyone! I (F21) am writing a fantasy story. The main character is based on my best friend, who is a gay man. There is a romance, but it is definitely not the focal point of the story. I have worked very hard to build the fantasy world my story takes place in, and people’s sexuality is not something that worries other people in the world that I am creating. The problem I found is this; I hear very often that women portray gay men and romances between two men HORRIBLY. This terrifies me as I really don’t want to spoil any aspect of it. Like I said before, the character’s sexuality is not the plot, but if people don’t think I’m portraying her correctly, I know it would take away their enjoyment of the story or they just won’t finish reading it. Does anyone have any advice? I would really appreciate it!
