Least known favorite first phrase / story opening
Anna Karenina, Neuromancer, 1984, The Gunslinger, Fahrenheit 451, Lolita, One Hundred Yeas of Solitude, are all famous examples of the first line. I thought it would be great to share favorites of lesser known examples. Perhaps not the great bestsellers, perhaps stories, novels, memoirs. Mine is: * On the fiery February morning Beatriz Viterbo died, after facing an agony that not for a single moment gave way to self-pity or fear, I noticed that the billboards on the sidewalks around Constitution Plaza announced some new brand or other of American. cigarettes * -from ‘El Aleph’ by my boy JL Borges Typically witty by Borges. It’s even a translation, but I can’t find the way to think that something was lost. I was writing a storm about why I love him so much; Then I realized that it would be like telling a joke and I stopped. Every time I read it, it reminds me of what someone can do with just one sentence. When I write, my thoughts shift from “I need to put something on the stupid page” to “the possibilities are endless, let’s say what we can do today”, and that’s why it’s my favorite opening line.
