Is it ever a good idea to kill a character out of the blue?

Without warning and without omens. There’s nothing in the earlier part of the story that makes someone think “well, they’re going to die later.” I want it to be realistic. There is no time to solve anything, nothing. The character dies instantly. Would this be bad storytelling or would it drive people away? This is my first post so I’m not sure what style to use.
